Abstract
This is a study and analysis of 42 patients who were pathologically proved to be intraabdominal tuberculosis and treated at the department of surgery, Seoul National University Hospital, from May 1975 to April 1981. The following results were obtained: 1) Among the 42 cases of intra-abdominal tuberculosis 22 cases were intestinal tuberculosis, 12 cases were tuberculous peritonitis and 8 cases were tuberculos mesenteric lymphadenitis. 2) The peak incidence was third decade in both sex (31%), and the ratio of male to female was 1 : 1,5. 3) The average duration of disease was less than 1 year. 4) The frequent sympoms were abdominal pain (72.7%), easy fatigability(34.1%), and nausea, vomiting(25%), but these were not pathognomonic. 5) The frequent physical signs were abdominal tenderness (63.6%), palpable mass(47. 7%). 6) The chest X-ray revealed that 21 cases (47. 7%) had pulmonary tuberculosis. 7) The predilection site was ileocecal region (86.4%). 8) Forty cases were confirmed by open biopsy and two cases were by abdominal paracentesis and colonoscopic biopsy. 9) The treatment of choice was primary resection as possible as in complicated cases of the intestinal tuberculosis. Diagnosis is difficult to make with only clinical pictures, laboratory and X-ray findings, so pathological diagnosis including frozen biopsy should be made in the suspected intraabdominal tuberculosis for adequate antibuberculous treatment. Excellent prognosis can be expected with primary resection as possible as, if surgical complications are present.
